Phenotypic and Molecular Diversity of Wild Populations of Acca sellowiana (Berg.) Burret in the Southern Area of Natural Distribution

Acca sellowiana is a subtropical tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) native to southern Brazil and northeastern Uruguay. It is recognized for its value as a fruit-bearing, ornamental, and medicinal species. Based on distinctive characteristics of fruits, seeds, and leaves, as well as its geographical distribution pattern, two variants of the species are distinguished: the “Brazilian type” and the “Uruguayan type”. The objective of this study was to characterize, for the first time, the diversity of 202 individuals from four wild populations in Uruguay, representative of the species’ most southern natural distribution. Twenty-three morphological descriptors (leaf, flower, and fruit) and 204 RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers were used. The morphological data collected validated the main criteria that distinguish “Uruguayan type” populations from “Brazilian type” populations, such as lower seed weight and fruit size, thin and slightly rough skin, high pulp percentage, and hairy white abaxial leaf surfaces. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data indicated wide diversity and strong population structuring, which is relevant information for designing conservation plans, sustainable utilization, and genetic improvement of the plant genetic resources of this species.

Microbial difference and its influencing factors in ice-covered lakes on the three poles

Most lakes in the world are permanently or seasonally covered with ice. However, little is known about the distribution of microbes and their influencing factors in ice-covered lakes worldwide. Here we analyzed the microbial community composition in the waters of 14 ice-covered lakes in the Hoh Xil region of northern Qing-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), and conducted a meta-analysis by integrating published microbial community data of ice-covered lakes in the tripolar regions (the Arctic, Antarctica and QTP). The results showed that there were significant differences in microbial diversity, community composition and distribution patterns in the ice-covered tripolar lakes. Microbial diversity and richness were lower in the ice-covered QTP lakes (including the studied lakes in the Hoh Xil region) than those in the Arctic and Antarctica. In the ice-covered lakes of Hoh Xil, prokaryotes are mainly involved in S-metabolic processes, making them more adaptable to extreme environmental conditions. In contrast, prokaryotes in the ice-covered lakes of the Arctic and Antarctica were predominantly involved in carbon/nitrogen metabolic processes. Deterministic (salinity and nutrients) and stochastic processes (dispersal limitation, homogenizing dispersal and drift) jointly determine the geographical distribution patterns of microorganisms in ice-covered lakes, with stochastic processes dominating. These results expand the understanding of microbial diversity, distribution patterns, and metabolic processes in polar ice-covered lakes.

A Poorly Known Catfish Clade in an Endangered Neotropical Biodiversity Hotspot: Relationships and Distribution Patterns of the Cambeva variegata Group (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae)

The Cambeva variegata group (CVG) is endemic to a region situated in the intersection of two endangered biodiversity hotspots, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, and drained by two important South American river basins, the upper Rio Paraná and upper Rio São Francisco basins. Presently, CVG comprises two nominal species, besides some still undescribed. We first performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis (total of 3368 bp) for five species of the CVG and 30 outgroups, which supported the monophyly of the CVG and its inclusion in Cambeva. Most morphological character states distinguishing the CVG from congeners are also present in Scleronema, possibly consisting of plesiomorphic features. We also performed the first time-calibrated phylogeny of the group, which supported possible relationships between present geographical distribution patterns and palaeogeographical events. The estimated time of origin of CVG in the Middle Miocene is nearly contemporaneous to a past hydrographical configuration when part of the upper Rio Paraná basin was connected to the Rio São Francisco basin. The first CVG lineage split occurring in the Miocene end corresponds to a major break in that palaeo basin. Species diversification between the Pliocene and early Pleistocene is compatible with final drainage rearrangement. This study highlights the urgent need for more detailed studies on the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of still poorly known organisms in this highly diverse and threatened region.

Biogeography of a multifunctional trait: Spiny plant species in the flora of Israel and the Palestinian Authority

Functional biogeography is the discipline that studies the geographic distribution of organismal traits and their relationships with environmental conditions and ecosystem functioning. Trait multifunctionality can be a major challenge in such analyses, so deciphering trait geographic distributions from functions is not always straightforward. We studied spinescence in the flora of Israel and the Palestinian Authority as a case of a multifunctional trait, associated mainly with antiherbivory defence, aridity alleviation, and propagule and seed dispersal. We studied how the proportion of spiny species in the flora of Israel and the Palestinian Authority and the distribution of different spine locations within the plants vary along a very strong bioclimatic (especially rainfall) gradient in Israel and the Palestinian Authority. We found that plant spinescence, as expressed in species proportion, is more frequently positively associated with increasing aridity and summer heat, and more generally with resource limitations. However, spinescence of reproductive plant parts, which in many species aids seed dispersal, presents opposite trends. These patterns reflect the differing importance of each of the three major roles attributed to plant spinescence, and point to the relative importance of each in driving overall spinescence geographic distribution. Thus, the traits’ geographic distribution patterns can elucidate these traits’ multifunctionality and improve our understanding of the evolution and spatial variation among these functions.

Does unequal economic development contribute to the inequitable distribution of healthcare resources? Evidence from China spanning 2001–2020

BackgroundThere is a dearth of research combining geographical big data on medical resource allocation and growth with various statistical data. Given the recent achievements of China in economic development and healthcare, this study takes China as an example to investigate the dynamic geographical distribution patterns of medical resources, utilizing data on healthcare resources from 290 cities in China, as well as economic and population-related data. The study aims to examine the correlation between economic growth and spatial distribution of medical resources, with the ultimate goal of providing evidence for promoting global health equity.MethodsThe data used in this study was sourced from the China City Statistical Yearbook from 2001 to 2020. Two indicators were employed to measure medical resources: the number of doctors per million population and the number of hospital and clinic beds per million population. We employed dynamic convergence model and fixed-effects model to examine the correlation between economic growth and the spatial distribution of medical resources. Ordinary least squares (OLS) were used to estimate the β values of the samples.ResultsThe average GDP for all city samples across all years was 36,019.31 ± 32,029.36, with an average of 2016.31 ± 1104.16 doctors per million people, and an average of 5986.2 ± 6801.67 hospital beds per million people. In the eastern cities, the average GDP for all city samples was 47,672.71 ± 37,850.77, with an average of 2264.58 ± 1288.89 doctors per million people, and an average of 3998.92 ± 1896.49 hospital beds per million people. Cities with initially low medical resources experienced faster growth (all β < 0, P < 0.001). The long-term convergence rate of the geographic distribution of medical resources in China was higher than the short-term convergence rate (|βi + 1| > |βi|, i = 1, 2, 3, …, 9, all β < 0, P < 0.001), and the convergence speed of doctor density exceeded that of bed density (bed: |βi| >doc: |βi|, i = 3, 4, 5, …, 10, P < 0.001). Economic growth significantly affected the convergence speed of medical resources, and this effect was nonlinear (doc: βi < 0, i = 1, 2, 3, …, 9, P < 0.05; bed: βi < 0, i = 1, 2, 3, …, 10, P < 0.01). The heterogeneity between provinces had a notable impact on the convergence of medical resources.ConclusionsThe experiences of China have provided significant insights for nations worldwide. Governments and institutions in all countries worldwide, should actively undertake measures to actively reduce health inequalities. This includes enhancing healthcare standards in impoverished regions, addressing issues of unequal distribution, and emphasizing the examination of social determinants of health within the domain of public health research.

Up-to-date Epidemiology of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection among Bulgarian Patients: a Single Centre Experience

Epidemiological data about chronic infection with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) are limited in Bulgaria. The aim of this study was to determine the Viremic Rate and the distribution of HCV genotypes in one centre for diagnosis and treatment of chronic liver diseases. Geographic patterns of genotype distribution and associations of genotype with viral load, gender and age were investigated. Serum samples from 1731 individuals with a positive HCV Antibody Test, collected between 2016 and 2019, were analysed. HCV RNA levels were determined by HCV quantitative RNA real time polymerase chain reaction. Individuals with detectable HCV RNA further underwent HCV genotyping analysis using the Versant HCV Genotype Assay (LiPA) 2.0. The mean age of all patients was 52.9±15.3 (17–87). Among those, 54.1% were men and 45.9% women. Most patients came from the south-western region of Bulgaria (21.7%). Viral load was proven in 1385 out of 1731 individuals (VR=80%). Genotype 1 (G1) was the predominant genotype (89.8%), followed by G3 (8.5%), G2 (0.9%), G4 (0.6%) and G5 (0.1%). Among individuals with G1, infection with subtype 1b was seen in 77.4% and with subtype 1a in 22.6%. Viral load was not found to be dependent on age or gender. Viral load was higher in patients with G1 compared to G3 ($$p=0.001$$). Finally, patients with G1b were significantly older than patients with G1a ($$p&lt;0.001$$) and G3 ($$p&lt;0.001$$). VR in the studied population (80%) appears to be higher than the VR reported for Central Europe (73.3%). In Bulgaria, the most prevalent genotype is G1 (89.8%). This is a higher rate in comparison to the observed G1 rate in Central Europe (70%). The second most prevalent genotype is G3 (8.5%), with fewer cases identified than in Central Europe (21%).

Spatial distribution of intangible cultural heritage resources in China and its influencing factors

Exploring the spatial distribution of China’s intangible cultural heritage resources and its influencing factors is an important foundation for their protection and development and a key step toward the integration of culture and tourism. To analyse the geographical distribution patterns of China’s 3610 intangible cultural heritage resources and their influencing factors, we comprehensively applied methods such as spatial analysis and geodetectors. The main findings are as follows: (1) In terms of spatial distribution, China’s intangible cultural heritage resources are unevenly distributed, with an overall agglomeration-type distribution. The distribution in the north‒south direction is more significant, with more resources in the east than in the west and more resources in the south than in the north. (2) In terms of the spatial distribution of various types of intangible cultural heritage sites, North and East China have always been areas with a high kernel density. (3) In terms of spatial trends, there is a clear correlation between the distribution of intangible cultural heritage resources and the state of economic development and historical and cultural heritage, i.e., the more economically developed and culturally rich a region is, the more resources of intangible cultural heritage there are. (4) The causes of the distribution of China’s intangible cultural heritage resources are complicated, the influence of social factors is much greater than that of natural factors, and multidimensional interactions have a relatively significant impact. This study is conducive to the planning and protection of China’s intangible cultural heritage resources at the national and regional levels and provides a reference for the sustainable development of China’s intangible cultural heritage resources.

Extensive Genetic Diversity and Epidemiological Patterns of Factor H-Binding Protein Variants among Neisseria meningitidis in China.

Factor H-binding protein (fHbp) is a virulence factor expressed by Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis), the primary causative agent of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in humans. fHbp is utilized as the main component in vaccines to provide protection against IMD caused by serogroup B N. meningitidis. In order to comprehensively investigate the genetic diversity and epidemiological patterns of fHbp variants within isolates of Chinese N. meningitidis, we utilized the NEIS0349 locus, which encompasses the complete coding sequences of fHbp. This enabled us to identify allelic variants of fHbp with enhanced resolution. A total of 109 fHbp variants were identified in 1013 Chinese N. meningitidis isolates. We reconstructed a phylogenetic tree and analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of each variant. Considering both temporal and geographical distribution patterns, only four fHbp variants (v2.16, v2.18, v2.404, and v2.21) exhibited persistent nationwide prevalence during the previous decade (2011-2021). These variants were highly prevalent in both serogroup B strains from patients and healthy individuals, suggesting their potential as suitable vaccine candidates for nationwide implementation against IMD caused by serogroup B strains. Our study emphasizes the significance of conducting continuous surveillance of meningococcal strains to monitor the genetic diversity of fHbp for the purpose of vaccine development.

Catalogue of the moniligastrid earthworms (Clitellata, Moniligastrida, Moniligastridae) of the world.

This study presents a comprehensive catalogue of the moniligastrid earthworms (Moniligastrida, Moniligastridae) of the world. A total of 176 valid species/subspecies belonging to 5 genera are known to exist in this primitive family. Drawida is the speciose genus with 147 species/subspecies. Of the various moniligastrids, three species of Drawida are considered as peregrine outside its normal Asian range. Among the valid species, occurrence of 30.68% are known only from the type locality. It is noteworthy that the types of 125 (71.02%) species are currently known to exist in various repositories around the world. The existence of the remaining species can only be inferred from the literature since their types are either non-existent, missing, dried out, or lost. Present catalogue includes valid scientific names, synonyms, type locality, type respository details along with registration number, geographic distribution pattern within its native range, and references.

Building a reference indicator model using co-kriging interpolation to determine the geographical origin of the flighted spongy moth complex in China.

Using stable isotopes to detect and analyze the geographical origin of insects represents an important traceability technology, which requires a rich isotope database. In this study, we representatively sampled the Chinese provinces where flighted spongy moth complex (FSMC) has been reported and, for the first time, used co-kriging interpolation to predict the distribution patterns of FSMC δ13 C values in the main distribution areas. From 2020 to 2022, we set up 60 traps in 12 provinces and cities in China and collected 795 FSMCs. Then, 6 main climatic factors were obtained by multi-collinearity screening from 21 types of meteorological data collected at the sample plots, and a correlation analysis was carried out by combining longitude, latitude, and altitude data with the δ13 C values of FSMC. Next, we performed a co-kriging interpolation using the 2 climatic factors with the highest correlation (isothermality and altitude) and the δ13 C values of FSMC. A cross-validation was performed to systematically test 11 candidate models and select the best semi-variogram model ("Exponential"), which was then used to build a co-kriging interpolation model. The geographical distribution patterns of the FSMC δ13 C values obtained from the 2 interpolation models (i.e., interpolated with isothermality and altitude, respectively) were almost the same. Moreover, the δ13 C values varied significantly at the regional scale, showing regular changes in spatial distribution. Overall, the reference indicator map of the δ13 C values generated from stable isotopes can be used to greatly improve the efficiency of discrimination analyses on the geographical origin of FSMC.

Macro-epibiont assemblages of mangrove forests in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman

In mangrove ecosystems, trees and aerial roots provide a hard substrate for the attachment of several groups of epibiont species. However, the diversity and abundance of epibionts varies in different geographic areas and has not been studied in many regions. Here, we studied the species composition, abundance, and biomass of macro-epibionts on Avicennia marina tree surfaces and pneumatophores along the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. A total of four species of epibionts were recorded, including an oyster Crassostrea sp., two barnacles Amphibalanus amphitrite and Microeuraphia permitini, and a snail Littoraria intermedia. Species composition did not show significant differences among sites, while abundance and biomass differed significantly. Oysters accounted for the largest proportion of biomass in the epibiont assemblages. In contrast to the distinct vertical distribution of epibionts on tree surfaces, there was no clear geographic distribution pattern of species from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. We suggest that the differences in mangrove epibiont assemblages are largely determined by local hydrographic conditions. These baseline data will contribute to the management and conservation of valuable mangrove ecosystems.

Biogeographic distribution of five Antarctic cyanobacteria using large-scale k-mer searching with sourmash branchwater.

Cyanobacteria form diverse communities and are important primary producers in Antarctic freshwater environments, but their geographic distribution patterns in Antarctica and globally are still unresolved. There are however few genomes of cultured cyanobacteria from Antarctica available and therefore metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from Antarctic cyanobacteria microbial mats provide an opportunity to explore distribution of uncultured taxa. These MAGs also allow comparison with metagenomes of cyanobacteria enriched communities from a range of habitats, geographic locations, and climates. However, most MAGs do not contain 16S rRNA gene sequences, making a 16S rRNA gene-based biogeography comparison difficult. An alternative technique is to use large-scale k-mer searching to find genomes of interest in public metagenomes. This paper presents the results of k-mer based searches for 5 Antarctic cyanobacteria MAGs from Lake Fryxell and Lake Vanda, assigned the names Phormidium pseudopriestleyi FRX01, Microcoleus sp. MP8IB2.171, Leptolyngbya sp. BulkMat.35, Pseudanabaenaceae cyanobacterium MP8IB2.15, and Leptolyngbyaceae cyanobacterium MP9P1.79 in 498,942 unassembled metagenomes from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Sequence Read Archive (SRA). The Microcoleus sp. MP8IB2.171 MAG was found in a wide variety of environments, the P. pseudopriestleyi MAG was found in environments with challenging conditions, the Leptolyngbyaceae cyanobacterium MP9P1.79 MAG was only found in Antarctica, and the Leptolyngbya sp. BulkMat.35 and Pseudanabaenaceae cyanobacterium MP8IB2.15 MAGs were found in Antarctic and other cold environments. The findings based on metagenome matches and global comparisons suggest that these Antarctic cyanobacteria have distinct distribution patterns ranging from locally restricted to global distribution across the cold biosphere and other climatic zones.

An Indo-West Pacific Distribution for the Coral-Dwelling Gall Crab Lithoscaptus doughnut (Decapoda: Cryptochiridae)

Coral-dwelling gall crabs (Cryptochiridae) are common inhabitants of scleractinian corals. Several species have been described as new in recent years, including Lithoscaptus doughnut, which was described from Hong Kong based on a single female retrieved from the coral Plesiastrea peroni. Here we extend the distribution range of L. doughnut with nine additional localities throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to the Coral Triangle and Japan. We describe a male specimen of L. doughnut for the first time, based on a specimen from Malaysia, and provide photographs of life and preserved material. Haplotype networks based on COI mtDNA (n = 12) and 16 rRNA sequences (n = 12) were created. We retrieved eleven COI haplotypes and six 16S haplotypes, however no clear geographic distribution pattern was discerned. Intraspecific variation in L. doughnut was 1.4% for COI and 0.2% for 16S. Lastly, the first colour photos and records of associated parasites of this species are provided.

Phylogeographical and population genetics of Polyspora sweet in China provides insights into its phylogenetic evolution and subtropical dispersal

BackgroundGeological movements and climatic fluctuations stand as pivotal catalysts driving speciation and phylogenetic evolution. The genus Polyspora Sweet (Theaceae), prominently found across the Malay Archipelagos and Indochina Peninsula in tropical Asia, exhibits its northernmost distribution in China. In this study, we investigated the evolutionary and biogeographical history of the genus Polyspora in China, shedding light on the mechanisms by which these species respond to ancient geological and climatic fluctuations.MethodsPhylogenetic relationships of 32 representative species of Theaceae were reconstructed based on the chloroplast genome and ribosome 18-26 S rRNA datasets. Species divergence time was estimated using molecular clock and five fossil calibration. The phylogeography and population genetics in 379 individuals from 32 populations of eight species were analyzed using chloroplast gene sequences (trnH-psbA, rpoB-trnC and petN-psbM), revealing the glacial refugia of each species, and exploring the causes of the phylogeographic patterns.ResultsWe found that Chinese Polyspora species diverged in the middle Miocene, showing a tropical-subtropical divergence order. A total of 52 haplotypes were identified by the combined chloroplast sequences. Chinese Polyspora exhibited a distinct phylogeographical structure, which could be divided into two clades and eight genealogical subdivisions. The divergence between the two clades occurred approximately 20.67 Ma. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that the genetic variation mainly occurred between species (77.91%). At the species level, Polyspora axillaris consists of three lineages, while P. speciosa had two lineages. The major lineages of Chinese Polyspora diverged between 12 and 15 Ma during the middle to late Miocene. The peak period of haplotype differentiation in each species occurred around the transition from the last interglacial to the last glacial period, approximately 6 Ma ago.ConclusionThe primary geographical distribution pattern of Chinese Polyspora was established prior to the last glacial maximum, and the population historical dynamics were relatively stable. The geological and climatic turbulence during the Quaternary glacial period had minimal impact on the distribution pattern of the genus. The genus coped with Quaternary climate turbulence by glacial in situ survival in multiple refuges. The Sino-Vietnam border and Nanling corridor might be the genetic mixing center of Polyspora.

Impact of Climate Change on the Potential Geographical Distribution Patterns of Luculia pinceana Hook. f. since the Last Glacial Maximum

In this study, we utilized 76 natural distribution points and six environmental variables to establish a detailed species distribution prediction process for Luculia pinceana Hook. f. Our aim was to explore the potential distribution patterns of L. pinceana since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and its response to climate change, providing a scientific basis for conservation strategies and the suitable introduction of its wild populations. This model enabled the prediction of L. pinceana’s geographical distribution patterns across five temporal phases: the LGM, the Mid-Holocene (MH), the present, and two future scenarios. Additionally, the model pinpointed the dominant environmental factors influencing these distribution patterns. The results indicate the following: (1) The temperature annual range (bio7), the minimum temperature of the coldest month (bio6), and the precipitation of the wettest month (bio13) are the dominant environmental factors that determine the distribution of L. pinceana. In areas where bio7 is less than 22.27 °C, bio6 is above 3.34 °C, and bio13 exceeds 307.65 mm, the suitability for L. pinceana is highest. (2) Under the current climatic conditions, the highly suitable area of L. pinceana accounts for 64 × 104 km2, which accounts for half of the total suitable area. The suitable habitats for L. pinceana are concentrated in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, southern Nyingchi in Tibet, and the coastal areas of South China. (3) During the LGM and the MH, the suitable habitats for L. pinceana were essentially consistent with the current scenarios, with no significant southward shift in distribution. This lack of a major southward migration during the LGM could be attributed to the species finding refuge in situ in mountainous areas. (4) Under various future emission scenarios, the suitable habitat area for L. pinceana is expected to experience significant expansion, generally shifting towards the northwest and higher latitudes. The anticipated global warming in the future is likely to provide more favorable conditions for the survival of L. pinceana. It is recommended that the introduction follows the direction of centroid migration, facilitated by vegetation management, and it has the ecological and economic benefits of L. pinceana to a greater extent.

Early warning and management of invasive crop pests under global warming: estimating the global geographical distribution patterns and ecological niche overlap of three Diabrotica beetles.

Invasive alien pests (IAPs) pose a major threat to global agriculture and food production. When multiple IAPs coexist in the same habitat and use the same resources, the economic loss to local agricultural production increases. Many species of the Diabrotica genus, such as Diabrotica barberi, Diabrotica undecimpunctata, and Diabrotica virgifera, originating from the USA and Mexico, seriously damaged maize production in North America and Europe. However, the potential geographic distributions (PGDs) and degree of ecological niche overlap among the three Diabrotica beetles remain unclear; thus, the potential coexistence zone is unknown. Based on environmental and species occurrence data, we used an ensemble model (EM) to predict the PGDs and overlapping PGD of the three Diabrotica beetles. The n-dimensional hypervolumes concept was used to explore the degree of niche overlap among the three species. The EM showed better reliability than the individual models. According to the EM results, the PGDs and overlapping PGD of the three Diabrotica beetles were mainly distributed in North America, Europe, and Asia. Under the current scenario, D. virgifera has the largest PGD ranges (1615 × 104 km2). In the future, the PGD of this species will expand further and reach a maximum under the SSP5-8.5 scenario in the 2050s (2499 × 104 km2). Diabrotica virgifera showed the highest potential for invasion under the current and future global warming scenarios. Among the three studied species, the degree of ecological niche overlap was the highest for D. undecimpunctata and D. virgifera, with the highest similarity in the PGD patterns and maximum coexistence range. Under global warming, the PGDs of the three Diabrotica beetles are expected to expand to high latitudes. Identifying the PGDs of the three Diabrotica beetles provides an important reference for quarantine authorities in countries at risk of invasion worldwide to develop specific preventive measures against pests.

The chemical composition, classification, and geographical distributions of soda-saline lakes in Eastern Tanzania's rift valley

New hydrological insight of the regionThe results revealed that lake water pH ranged from 9.0 to 10.2, EC ranged from 2843 to 109,800 µS/cm, and Na+ dominated over other cations with mixed dominance of HCO3- + CO32-, Cl-, and SO42-. The study also revealed that lakes Balangida and Balangida Lelu had higher sulphate levels than the other lakes, presumably due to sulfate-rich bedrock and local agricultural input. The study suggests that trace elements and heavy metals in lake water depend on their geology, past usage, and specific environmental conditions. The saturation index (SI) showed that the lakes were oversaturated with dolomite, calcite, and aragonite but undersaturated with anhydrite, gypsum, and halite. Lakes Natron and Manyara are classified as soda types, lakes Balangida and Eyasi are classified as soda-saline types; and lakes Singidani, Kindai, Mikuyu, Balangida Lalu, and Sulunga are classified as saline types. The geographical distribution patterns showed that soda-type and soda-saline lakes were most common in northern Tanzania (Arusha and Manyara). In contrast, saline-type lakes were common in the central regions between Dodoma and Singida. The dominant volcanic nature in the northern part possibly influences soda and soda-saline types.

Catalogue of Life serves as the background baseline information for the biota of a given natural geographic region or administrative unit. The timely updating of its dynamics is an important basis for the research, management and monitoring of biodiversity conservation. The integration and sharing of biodiversity data can provide a scientific basis for the development of related studies. Primula L. is a typical genus characterized by a broad distribution and a high degree of endemism, with diverse habitats and a complex taxon structure. An in-depth analysis of its geographical distribution pattern and characteristics can provide a foundational basis for the conservation and use of germplasm resources. With the aim of offering a reference for germplasm resource surveys and application research on seed introduction, and based on a large amount of basic data and literature, this paper adopts the taxonomic system used by Flora of China to update the list of wild species of the genus Primula L. distributed in the terrestrial area of China. In the paper, we counted their species diversity, composition and other information, and established a dataset of the diversity and geographical distributions of wild Primula L. in China. This genus predominantly thrives in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Its diversity center and modern distribution center are also widely distributed in the eastern Himalayas and Hengduan Mountains in broad sense, Tianshan Mountain Area, Qinba Mountain area, Wuling Mountains Area, Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Yunnan Guizhou Plateau and other high-altitude areas. Additionally, it extends to middle and lower altitude areas with prominent karst and Danxia landscapes. As of October 2022, a total of 397 species (28 varieties and 26 subspecies) of the genus Primula L. have been recorded in China, including 296 endemic species (including subspecies classification units, the same below) in China. In addition to the five administrative regions of Jiangsu, Hainan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macao, the distribution of wild primroses has been recorded in various provincial administrative regions in China, with Sichuan Province boasting the highest species richness and endemism at the provincial scale (177 species), followed by Yunnan Province (176 species) and the Tibet Autonomous Region (171 species). At the county scale, Shangri-La City ranks first in species richness with 62 species.

How we count counts: Examining influences on detection during shoreline surveys of marine debris

Shoreline surveys are a common approach for documenting loads of marine macrodebris (≥ 2.5 cm). When surveys are conducted repeatedly over time and space, patterns in source, abundance, geographic distribution, and composition can be detected. Yet to realize their full potential, monitoring programs that rely on surveys must grapple with high variability in debris abundance, and appropriately manage uncertainty when reporting estimates of debris quantity. A potentially important source of bias in estimating debris loads from shoreline monitoring datasets is variability in debris detection rates. With this in mind, we conducted field experiments using common strip-transect marine debris survey protocols, designed to test detection of macrodebris. We quantified how protocol, shoreline, and debris characteristics influence the detectability of marine macrodebris. Detection rates varied according to debris distance from observer (0–5 m), number of observers, debris characteristics (size, color), and shoreline substrate. Our results highlight considerations for monitoring program design. Comparisons across datasets should be approached cautiously given differences in survey protocols and sources of bias that may affect debris density estimates should be quantified and addressed. We hope these results will inform marine debris monitoring efforts that are optimized for intended data use and impact.

Adaptability Analysis of the Evergreen Pioneer Tree Species Schima superba to Climate Change in Zhejiang Province

In recent years, frequent global climate change has led to extreme weather events, such as high temperatures and droughts. Under the backdrop of climate change, the potential distribution zones of plants will undergo alterations. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the potential geographical distribution patterns of plants under climate change. Schima superba, a plant species with significant ecological and economic value, plays a crucial role in ecological restoration and maintaining environmental stability. Therefore, predicting potential changes in its suitable habitat in Zhejiang Province is significant. The MaxEnt model and combined data from 831 monitoring sites where Schima superba is distributed in Zhejiang Province with 12 selected bioclimatic variables were used to predict habitat suitability adaptability. We found that (1) the average AUC value of the MaxEnt model in repeated experiments was 0.804, with a standard deviation of 0.014, which indicates high reliability in predictions. (2) The total suitable habitat area for Schima superba in Zhejiang Province (suitability value &gt; 0.05) is 87,600 km2, with high-suitability, moderate-suitability, and low-suitability areas covering 29,400 km2, 25,700 km2, and 32,500 km2, respectively. (3) Likewise, elevation, precipitation, and temperature are the dominant climatic variables that influence the distribution of Schima superba. Schima superba mainly occurs in areas with an elevation above 500 m and precipitation over 140 mm during the hottest season. The probability of Schima superba distribution reaches its peak at elevations between 1200 and 1400 m. Here, the precipitation ranges from 300 to 350 mm with high humidity, between 160 and 170 mm during the hottest season, and an annual temperature range between 28 and 31 °C. Therefore, our results indicate that climate change significantly affects the suitable habitat area of Schima superba. We also reveal the ecological characteristics and adaptation mechanisms of Schima superba in different geographical regions of Zhejiang Province. Future research should focus on the relationship between plant adaptation strategies and environmental changes, as well as applications in ecosystem protection and sustainable development, to promote the development and application of plant habitat adaptability research.
